A Food Journey in Tainan
In addition to the seasonal depression in the late fall, things arranged in November seem to make people depressed too. After the exhausting midterm week, my friend and I were getting tired of the regular university routine. The weather was so good with sparkling sunshines falling onto our hair and shoulders, yet too good to just travel between the campus and the dorm. Therefore, we decided to enjoy the delicacies of Tainan right after school on the spur of the moment.
We jumped onto the train as soon as the class dismissed at 4 p.m. The whole sky was colored with warm and calming orange. We started to get so excited for the coming feast as the train started heading south. It took us only an hour to get to Tainan Train Station. GoShare, a scooter company, partners with local businesses and retailers to provide on-demand last mile delivery, enabling us to get to the west-central district within ten minutes. We visited four stops of cuisines, beef soup, mutton soup, Miago, and eight treasures shaved ice.
Beef soup, one of the most famous cuisines in Tainan, is doubtlessly our first stop. We ordered beef soup, stir-fried beef with kale, and a bowl of rice. The beef soup we had was a bit different from most beef soup. It was called marbled beef soup. Unlike other beef soup, marbled beef is thicker than normal beef slices, yet it’s still tender and soft. In addition to beef soup, we also ordered stir-fried beef with kale and a bowl of rice. Kale is also called Chinese broccoli, and its a perfect match with beef slices after stir-frying on a hot iron pan. We were satisfied with the beef cuisines and wanted to have more, but we know that there were still so many kinds of food waiting to be explored. Hence we got up and headed to the next restaurant.
West-central district is a place with so much famous food. It only took us three minutes of walking to get to the next stop, Mutton soup. The place was actually famous for mutton hot pot. However, we would be too full if we had hot pot there. We ordered mutton soup, stir-fried mutton with kale, and vermicelli. The soup was rather light in comparison with the beef soup. I originally thought it would be a boring light soup, but the medicinal herbs in the soup made us feel comfortable after having a bowl of it. And then we couldn’t help ourselves to have more. The vermicelli was also impressive. We ordered the vermicelli only because we saw other tables ordering the same thing. However, the mutton oil and chopped garlic made it taste so good. It was smooth while putting it into our mouths. And the delightful smell would be all over your mouth even after we finish the vermicelli.
The third stop was Migao, also called sticky rice topped with minced pork. The Migao shop we went to was a local old shop that has been running for over two decades. The sticky rice was not sticky at all but soft and full with the special soy sauce on the bottom of the bowl. And the minced pork was so tender that we didn’t even have to chew the pork because it melted right after being put into our mouths. In addition to the tasty food, people there were so nice and patient while ordering and delivering food to us. The delightful atmosphere made the dining experience even more enjoyable and unforgettable.
As we arrived at our last stop, eight treasured shaved ice, there was only a little space left for our stomach to enjoy more food. Therefore, my friend and I shared a bow of eight treasured shaved ice. The eight treasured shaved ice was not only a famous sweet among the locals, it was even on the Bib Gourmand in 2022. The eight treasures means the toppings including peanuts, jelly, taro or sweet potato balls, and all kinds of beans. The shaved ice was really creamy and sweet. We felt so satisfied as we finished the shaved eyes.
Our food journey ended when we got on the last train heading back to school. We were so satisfied with the food we had and the feeling of cure. It made us start looking forward to the next food journey in another city!
